Prediction for Artist of the Decade: kanYe West

Posted by Muses On December - 31 - 2009

Okay so let’s make this somewhat quick and to the point, this is by all accounts a BEAR market. For those of us not Economists, that means that the market is slow, not a lot of action, etc. Well, don’t look now but seems someone must have told Kanye West differently. It seems he doesn’t even know how to pronounce, let alone spell recession. Wait, let’s not talk numbers just yet though, after all we are music lovers not CPAs right? Let’s talk facts!

I’ve concluded that no one is more famous in music than Kanye West, this past decade. Miley Cyrus said she doesn’t listen to Jay-Z (who only worked part-time for the decade) and never heard one of his songs, but oddly enough she knows Cristal costs $1500 without a tip and can probably sing “Umbrella” in Japanese. That’s influence ladies and gents! So let’s talk influence; Kanye is influential VERY influential, in fact he influenced the aforementioned Jay-Z. ‘Big deal’ some of you say, ‘fans follow fashion and that doesn’t prove anything artistically’. But need I remind you that Kanye changed the nature of music with his influence I say, not just the fashion trends worldwide. Sonically, directly or indirectly, the world has felt the Bashful Bear’s presence. Need I remind you that before Kanye; music was light and airy and now due largely to his work inspiring other artists in many genres; music is more soulful and melody driven? You must have forgot that pretty much every English speaking person with a pulse knew the “Gold Digger” chorus? Now I know that that alone doesn’t qualify someone for the crown but when that is just another notch on your belt, you know you are a big deal.

He didn’t do it by himself either, but to me that lends even more credibility to the title of “Artist of the Decade”. The sound he reintroduced through his soul samples have changed the dynamics of popular music. Lady Gaga knows, Beyonce knows, Rhianna Knows, Taylor Swift found out ;) . He also brought a lot of other critically acclaimed and commercially legit stars along with him:  Lupe Fiasco, John Legend, to name a couple. Pop music threw out the ultra happy high pitched tempo rhythms for a more soulful and thoughtful vibe, thanks to Mr. West, now almost 10 years since his first hit song (Jay-Z’s “H-to-the Izzo”), he is still slightly ahead of the curve and bringing us the “fresh”.

We all love the underdog story and Kanye is the underdog’s underdog. Therefore I argue: you sir or madam may not know it but you are more of a fan than you know. He wasn’t supposed to be heard like many of the other popular musicians with hard luck back-stories, which we see on VH1, but his story was a bit more desperate than the average…

*Video Break*

(cont’d)…initially introduced as a producer, he found himself pigeon-holed in the rap industry, but rose to fame and music success. As one of the hottest and most innovative artist in the business behind the scenes. Before long to get a hit you just need to have Kanye West in the background, and watch the money pour in. Sure, he could have cashed in and kicked back with his feet up. He could have done what so many before him did, get paid become powerful start a company and laugh all the way to the bank. But he strived for more, so he stepped front and center. Don’t let the results fool you there are many #1 producer mangled corpses strewn along the road of making the transition from behind the scenes to front stage! But, the few who survived are all legends. Dr Dre, Wu-Tang’s RZA, and Pete Rock are the few that have a number one album under their belt that they vocally performed on and produced. However Kanye West is the only one with a number one album he produced as WITHOUT performing on ( “Blueprint” Along with Just Blaze in 2001) and one which he did perform on and Produce or Co-Produce.

OK So Let’s Talk Numbers:

5 albums and 38 songs which made it to the charts as of week 10/2003. The songs spend a total of 3199 weeks on the charts, and the albums a total of 806 weeks. Through The Wire was the first song to hit the charts on week 48/2003

(Source: http://acharts.us/performer/kanye_west)

However, numbers aren’t everything in my opinion. A lot less talented artists *cough* can boast of much better sales, true. But that has less to do with what they are putting out in stores and who is putting it out for them on a whole. Which is why my case started with his impact rather than his chart performance. Let the record show: Kanye West is one of the few artists in pop music in this digital age that seemingly can craft a masterpiece from start to finish (or at least has the best shot of doing so). This fact alone speaks volumes as to why he is going to be remembered as the biggest icon of the decade. Also, I will concede my bias due to the fact that I am a strong supporter after he slighted unpopular president Bush during a telethon for Katrina victims, which I always see as fake and press ops for celebrities anyways.

And just in case you are wondering I would never end this with a cheesy line or song title from the artist’s catalog like “Kanye West Says to Critics: Can’t Tell Me Nothin” to support my thesis. Never.

Nanowrimo ’09: Mission Accomplished!!

Day #25:
I finally manned up and just rocked out today and finished nanowrimo! Feels good, was a huge responsibility. I am actually probably going to spend the next year writing most of the detailed complete first draft as I think this would make a great series. So nanowrimo lives on for me for another six months at least! I could have finished as I said on the last blog last week, but I hit the wall, HARD. I sometimes, without direct competition, tend to lose motivation when I am on the cusp of victory, this was another positive step as well, just finishing it. I spend the last 4-5 days building up to do it. Yesterday I did a little like 700-800 words and then I got up today took a break did some meditation and banged it out about 5200 word which is my highest for the month. Although I will add that the health food snacks definitely help when I am writing. can’t wait till next year. I see some people actually have done full novels in their time would like to try that next year, shouldn’t be too bad. Final stats are 70 and a half pages and 50,466 words. It is a great place to start for all aspiring writers, next month is editing might just go with the flow on that to learn the ropes and then get back to full on writing in Jan ’10.

NaNoWriMo ’09!

I know what you are saying ‘WTH/what the hell is  NaNoWriMo ’09?’ The reason I know this is because I asked the same thing when I first heard of it from this guy called Future1 on a “eclectic” website called BGOL. It mean November National Writing Month is a month long challenge to write a 50,000 word novel (novelette technically) in 30 days that is the month of November. At this time I am representing several Regions: Washington D.C., Boston, The Caribbean and Milwaukee. I like my chances and I did a rough outline yesterday and need to do a lot more thinking before this will be a cake walk, but I have a great strategy and I should be able to finish the contest and edit and hopefully have something worthy of alien eyes by the second quarter next year! I am trying to get one of the areas to put up a Facebook or twitter and that way we can annoy an even greater number of people we have very weak bonds to begin with all November! If that doesn’t work I am considering making this a journal or sorts with short blurbs but posting here daily to someone this spoiled is actually frightening. I like making quality looking blog entries so it would be tough to scramble a few words together – on second thoughts maybe not. Anyways, my story is futuristic, sci-fi – for now and I did 3 1/8ths pages which was shockingly 2,223 words which would have me done with a week to spare even if I don’t do more as we go along. This is something i look forward to every year, next year I think I will try to get sponsers and make a saleable book for charity or something.

Rewarding. Yes rewarding would be the single word I would use to describe the complete film experience of Medicine For Melancholy. Ironically; though the plot surrounds a one night stand, this really wouldn’t make a great date movie, it would be more of a “in a committed relationship” movie.

Medicine For Melancholy is a love story about the City of San Fransisco as much as it is or more than it is about the two characters. The main character Micah (Wyatt Cenac) wakes up after a heavy night of drinking in bed with Angela or Joanne ( Tracey Heggins who bears a pleasant resemblance to a young Lynn Whitfield) and seemingly in reverse order the story of their love affair begins. The initial sexual tension becomes like a dance between the two as they pull and push their way into each others worlds. All this amidst the backdrop of the insanely complex maze of social circles, race, income and geographical disparity that is apparently characteristic of the city of San Fransisco. After this gets cemented for the moviegoer the director, (Barry Jenkins) expertly releases the reigns of the plot and an organic development and flow of the story and characters (city included) dominate the remainder of the film.

With the regard to the city immediately you are transported to the metaphorical psyche of San Fransisco, its beautiful landscapes and unique layout. Immediately following this you are given a taste of its diversity and then its history.

The chemistry in the film was phenomenal, both between actors and the relationships with the city. As with all of my reviews I don’t reveal any plots and as little of the actual story as possible, my goal is to comment on its worthiness for your time and money. But, I think the awkwardness of the morning after the overnight stand could have been handled a bit better, it seemed a bit overreaching, though I may be missing the point. Production-wise the cinematography was very artistic, perfectly muted enough to draw us deeper and deeper into the story as the film progressed. However, I did notice the sound was a bit clumsy, I am not sure if it was for an authentic effect but certain parts just didn’t audibly gel with the pace or the feel of the story. This however has nothing to do with the lofty lullaby of the score or the soundtrack.

m4mwall

This film is definitely not one that you can watch without being drawn into it. This is both good and bad in a couple ways. It is good because the story gets its hooks in you, it allows you to evaluate yourself along with the characters. It also draws attention to the subject matter, but this is a double edged sword. The question I have about this film is that was it as entertaining as it should be? I am sold on it’s quality but the moral seems to occupy a little more shelf space than I am used to with most stories. For example, I have never been to San Fransisco, but as a native of San Fransisco is it possible I would think this is THEE FILM OF THE YEAR? I am not sure, reflecting on it now I wonder; maybe I missed most of the substance being I am an outsider and can’t relate as much as a native. Also, did the Afro-Centric sprinkles get a bit too heavy at a time? Not sure about that either and I can’t tell, because I am African American, though it is possible just my asking may be the answer to that question.
For the studio, Strike Anywhere, they may feel that they have hit this one out of the park as this contemplation is exactly what I should be feeling at the end of their film. Perhaps being a foreign Asian or other Non-African American person this film has as rich of a meaning as it does to “Indie” African Americans in the Bay. That isn’t the point I know, and I am not here to evaluate the studio’s mission statement, but the film was that good and such a breath of fresh air that it forced me to ponder. I highly recommend this DVD and there is absolutely no way a person complaining about Hollywood’s stagnation and stranglehold on the culture and artistic creativity should miss Medicine For Melancholy

Foreign Movie Review: A Prophet (Un Prophète) 2009

Before I start I would like to warn you that I am not a critic, I am simply a reviewer, so I have an opinion, but I don’t have an agenda. My purpose here is to give my observations and thoughts of a movie I have watched while focused. Also I recommend you do not watch the trailers or read the “imdb” plot description because they give away too much. A Prophet (Un Prophète in French) starts off a little jerky; we open in a foreign prison, with Malek (Tahar Rahim) who looks like he got chewed up and spit out by life. I am not a ‘prison’ person, didn’t watch much OZ or Prison Break, so if this is you as well, then you need not worry it isn’t that kind of movie. Nothing is revealed in the first few minutes of any interest, and by all accounts the movie seems a bit slow, but this is done intentionally. If you can make it through the first 10 minutes or so without losing interest this movie is going to be and excellent find for you once it gets into gear.

Without giving anything away, I want to express what you would be in for if you decide to give A Prophet a chance. The story is itself not very edge of your seat exciting, it has slight blips of genius originality, but this is not where the movie shines. The realism and mastery that the film delivers without pause is what makes it a must see for mature movie palates. The cinematography is very much like that of a documentary (this technique is called cinema verité or true film), yet it seems quite deliberate. The acting is astonishing, even though I am watching subtitles I feel that every scene is almost improvised and reworked to perfection. This movie draws you in, you don’t have to do much but try to stay aboard the ride as they take you through a roller coaster of suspense and mystery sprinkled with well proportioned and well timed action and a small dash of the metaphysical..

I will admit that the title threw me off, A Prophet, when dealing with a middle eastern character (do not worry this isn’t that type of movie) made me think of Mohammad who is The Prophet for Islam. Also, I thought of the saying “A Prophet is not without honor save in his own country. But true to the post modernistic tint that the film has, it doesn’t answer that fully either, which to someone as used to Hollywood ‘flicks’ I am used to is always a bit out of my comfort zone. Besides that cinematic sting, there were no holes in the plot, also not too many large leaps of faith, and no agenda; which is VERY important to me in films. There was a racial/religious dynamic to the movie, but the filmmaker doesn’t use it as a crutch like some others do, which is again a relief. The dynamic, like the prison backdrop is only part of the scenery and never really much more. Awards aside, I feel like this movie is well worth the watch, so enjoy.
(I apologize if I have made any cultural errors, French/Muslim/Islamic, etc, I assure you it was out of ignorance not malice)

Retired Featured Videos

This section is for the front page upper right videos that I retire and possibly recycle.Except here they are not shrunk and I will give a few moments of reflections on them.

This is a very funny video I shared it with other hip hop lovers. Can’t go wrong with Bert and Ernie as; much of art is juxtaposition. This was well done and with over 4 million views as of 9/23/09 I am glad others appreciate it.

Big question is why M.O.P. can’t get this kind of love from the scan-tron? Obviously people are familiar with the song and enjoy it at least 2 million of the viewers, while M.O.P. despite poor business practices can’t tap into that audience. For now Fool what you want? Your life or ya jewels? Fool what you want I’m stifling fools!!

This was a VERY hard video to find, I had 2-3 videos on deck which I wanted to use but went with this one instead. This was basically the grand opening video because the previous one was just up while I got my first few posts up. Believe or not there is no “Are you reaaaady for some football?!?!” vids or audios I could find.

The following video i got from TED Talks YouTube Channel TED is awesome and a much needed part of any pseudo-intellectual’s arsenal ;-)
The African gentleman in the video flips a clean energy fifty foot bird to the energy corps by making a wind powered generator “McGuyver style” in his back yard…I wish guys like him got a few million bucks from the billions we in the world are sending in Aid to Africa since he is turning a profit with scrap metal imagine the possibilities…
